Stepping aboard the ms Amsterdam

Recently, a few members of the Development Promotions team got to stretch out their sea legs with a small group of agents with a visit onboard a 5-star premium ship; Holland America Line’s ms Amsterdam.

A mid-size ship hosting 1380 guests, the ms Amsterdam was recently in Cape Town on a 2-night overstay as part of her 2018 Grand World Voyage. The full cruise started in Fort Lauderdale on 4 January, cruising through the Panama Canal, and the Equator to the French Polynesian Islands. She also visited various ports around New Zealand and Australia before spending time in and around Asia, the Seychelles, Madagascar and Mozambique, before arriving in Cape Town.

Cape Town is one of the disembarkation/embarkation points of her journey, and she left on 5 April to continue the last leg, visiting Namibia, Angola, Senegal, Cape Verde and Puerto Rico before finishing in Fort Lauderdale again on the 28th of April.

The grand tour

Our tour was an informal one hosted by ourselves, Development Promotions, the GSA for Holland America Line, says Emma Momberg, Key Account Sales for Development Promotions.

“We started at the top deck of the ship and worked our way around viewing her two swimming pool restaurants including Dive In, the perfect place to grab a burger, slice of pizza or taco pool-side.  Next was Lido Market, the buffet restaurant on the ship offering a wide selection of fare. We also got to see the incredibly spacious gym and fitness centre, as well as the luxurious Greenhouse Spa and Salon, which are typically more busy on your sea-days”.

“My favourite part of the ms Amsterdam was The Crow’s Nest with its breathtaking panoramic views. It’s the perfect spot for evening cocktails and enjoying some time on the dance floor. Holland America Line is always great for families with its age-appropriate activities, so next we visited Club HAL which boasts a pirate theme and outdoor area with their own kiddies splash pool.”

The agents also got to experience The Promenade and Upper Promenade Decks which are considered the heart of the ms Amsterdam, boasting a shopping arcade, a casino and sports bar. There also a designated area with onboard cruise consultants where guests can book their next cruise, and receive exclusive offers while a photo gallery and the Explorations Cafe offers the perfect place for cruisers to catch up some reading or check emails with a freshly brewed cappuccino.

Dinner and a show

Next, the team was shown the Pinnacle Grill, one of the alternative dining options onboard, perfect for a celebration dinner. This comes at an additional surcharge but offers dishes such as king salmon from Alaska or the perfectly cooked steak!

There is also a wine tasting area onboard, and opposite this the Culinary Arts Centre where guests can engage in hands-on cooking classes and demonstrations or experience America’s Test Kitchen (a cooking show which tests products and recipes), Emma added.

“The La Fontaine Dining Room and Queens Lounge spreads over two decks, while the main dining room offers three dining options – As You Wish Dining for guests looking for flexibility in their eating times and then the two set dining times; early and late sittings, while The Queens Lounge puts on award-winning shows in the evenings catering for the different dinner sitting times”.

Back on land

The team and agents finished their time onboard at the exquisite centre of the ship – the Atrium, where a beautiful ancient celestial clock is the focus point.  It’s a great meeting point on the ship and is also the location for guest services and shore excursions desks.

It was a most enjoyable and informative ship visit and a great day was had by all, concluded Emma. “We ended off our tour with refreshments and tasty snacks at the lovely Commodore Hotel where we chatted about our time onboard and Holland America Line’s current Ready Set Sail Promotion. This promotion is offered on select sailings with 50% reduced deposits and pre-paid gratuities. When booking a suite, guests also receive up to US$300 onboard spending money per stateroom.”
